ABBY DOBSON + BRENDAN WELCH + THE FURBELOWS
7.30PM: DOORS
8.00PM: THE FURBELOWS
8.45PM: BRENDAN WELCH
9.30PM: ABBY DOBSON
It is dead set exciting how many great Australian singer/songwriters we are getting to host this year, and this week we welcome the beautiful Abby Dobson.
Abby fronted popular band Leonardo’s Bride between 1992-2001, having a Gold selling album with 1997′s Angel Blood which included the APRA Song of the Year in 1998 ‘Even When I’m Sleeping’.
Abby released a cracking solo record in 2007, and has continued to perform around Australia both under her name and with her Frenchy band Beby Et Lulu.
Watch this classic performance from the 1997 ARIA Awards:
The Furbelows call themselves a 1930s party band, “a combination of three-part close-harmony vocals and hot swinging acoustic guitars of wartime Paris”. They will be bringing some much needed jazz influence to our little folk club, and more importantly, a good dowse of good times to kick off this Wednesday show. Who says you can’t start a folk club with a 6-piece trad-jazz-harmony-singing-wartime-sounding-1930s-party-band. Not us.
This week, we also welcome back our first repeat performer. Nothing wrong with that, there are just so many great acts around the place it has yet to happen. Why not start with Brendan Welch though. He played a brilliant and typically unassuming set on May 21st, charming the audience with some of the best songwriting going in this fine city and a disarming, but loveable turn of phrase.
